Cody Rhodes believes wrestlers tend to focus too much on criticism in the age of social media.

During a recent appearance on Mostly Sports With Mark Titus and Brandon Walker, the former Undisputed WWE Champion said online reactions are often skewed toward negativity and that positive feedback is quieter and less visible.

“Here’s what every wrestler does. Their segment airs. They go check their phone. Every wrestler does it. They see the things that people didn’t like. They don’t see the six that were like, ‘Oh, that was great. That was awesome.’ It’s like Yelp. I ain’t going on there to write a good review,” Rhodes said.

Instead of embarking on a blocking spree, Rhodes advised fellow pro wrestlers against engaging with critics online, noting that the attention only validates them. He also pushed back against the idea that social media “isn’t real life.”

Cody Rhodes advises wrestlers to stay emotionally detached from social media

“Never block because you just signed a digital autograph for them. Never block. Never acknowledge. You don’t have to. You don’t have to acknowledge. Here’s the mistake people make. ‘There’s no such thing as social media.’ That’s a lie. Social media is very real and people are real.

‘Oh, they’re bots.’ Not all of them. Sure, some of them are real. In the middle, though, is the truth. Is it a massive metric? Not as big as we think. But is it completely non-existent? No.”

In conclusion, Rhodes explained how he approaches social media, noting that it can be useful as a temperature check because it helps him gauge momentum before walking into an arena.

“You do have to hear them every now and then. It’s super helpful for me. I know when I’m walking into a building that’s going to be giving me a ‘Let’s go, Cody/Cody sucks!’ I know when I’m going to be walking into a building that’s just great — they’re happy to have me — usually because of X and Instagram and all those places.” [H/T NoDq.com]
