Ronda Rousey Says Women Are Headlining WWE Because of Her

Former WWE and UFC star Ronda Rousey is saying that women headlining WWE shows today is largely because of the path she helped carve out. Her comments have always sparked mixed reactions. Nevertheless, Rousey says she is proud of the impact she made in both MMA and professional wrestling.
Rousey first appeared in WWE at WrestleMania 31 before officially signing in 2018. She quickly became one of the company’s biggest stars. Her debut match at WrestleMania 34 received strong reviews, and she later won the RAW Women’s Championship.
She even headlined WrestleMania 35 alongside Becky Lynch and Charlotte Flair. It was the first women’s match ever to main event WrestleMania and became a major milestone for WWE.
Rousey returned to WWE again in 2022 and won another Royal Rumble match. During her second run, she teamed with Shayna Baszler to win the Tag Team Titles. Her final WWE match took place at SummerSlam 2023.
Ronda Rousey believes her success helped change the landscape for women across combat sports
Speaking with The Takedown on SI before her upcoming MMA bout against Gina Carano, Rousey talked about the influence she believes she had on combat sports. She said that her success helped women headline big events.
“I’m very aware that women are headlining WWE because of me. That women are headlining and making big paydays in boxing because of me. In bare-knuckle boxing, in full-contact karate, in everything that’s a contact sport. I’m very, very proud of seeing all the success the women are having, because I was able to prove their commercial viability, and everyone’s trying to recapture that lightning in a bottle,” Rousey said.
“I’m so happy to see it. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to fully understand the scope of those ripple effects — nor anybody else — but that’s not why you do it. I’m very, very proud, and it’s very cool to see. I’m glad it’s got to the point that things are so different that people forget how it used to be. I’m not mad at that. I’m proud,” Rousey added.
However, not everyone agrees with her comments, especially wrestling fans who credit stars like Becky Lynch, Charlotte Flair, Sasha Banks, and Bayley for helping push WWE’s women’s division forward. Still, many fans also recognize that Ronda Rousey’s rise in the UFC coincided with WWE taking women’s wrestling more seriously.
