AEW’s MVP called out an infamous WWE WrestleMania storyline as overtly racist while discussing the need to eliminate racist characters from modern-day wrestling.

Speaking on a recent episode of his Marking Out podcast, former WWE and current AEW star Montel Vontavious Porter (MVP) discussed which cheap heat topics wrestlers should avoid on the mic to prevent damaging their characters or real-life locker room issues.

MVP noted that racist characters are not good for wrestlers anymore. Talking about the need to eliminate such characters from modern-day wrestling, he cited the infamous Triple H and Booker T feud heading into WWE WrestleMania 19 as a case of overt racism. The rivalry featured a promo segment in which the Game told Booker T that people like him don’t deserve to be a world champion. The segment caused quite the uproar among fans.

“I think racist characters now, they’re not good for you,” MVP said. “And people know I always go in on Triple H and how I don’t like him or respect him. But if you look at that promo that he cut on Booker T going into WrestleMania, it was this overt racism.

“I don’t know why anybody would, especially in modern times, would want to present their character as an overt racist. I don’t know what that does for you, especially in these modern times in terms of heat, when we all know it’s entertainment. It makes me wonder what motivates you…I don’t know. I just think that that doesn’t go well,” the former WWE star said. [H/T WrestlingInc]

Booker said he didn’t lose sleep over not winning the WWE WrestleMania 19 match

While appearing on stage at WWE World last year, Booker T reiterated that he never lost any sleep over not winning the WrestleMania 19 match against Triple H. He said he still considers it a personal victory because of what he overcame in life.

“You know what? A lot of — so many people, a lot of office guys told me, ‘Man, you should have won that night.’ You know what I mean? And with the angle, yeah, perhaps I should have won that night,” the WWE legend explained. “But honestly, I never really lost any sleep over it or anything like that. I always looked at wrestling a certain way. I always looked at it as a performance.”

“[I’d left] everything in the ring that night. I went out and performed my ass off. I didn’t win. But I still won. Because I’m a kid, I’m a kid from South Park, Texas, who dropped out of school in the 10th grade, who went to prison. All right. Got locked up. Came out, and found myself at the main event of WrestleMania. All right. That’s a win. That’s a win. Any way you look at it. Any way you look at it, that’s a win,” the WWE Hall of Famer said.
