Blake Monroe Explains Why She Left AEW For WWE
Blake Monroe has addressed the high expectations that followed her move to WWE NXT.
Before joining WWE, Monroe competed in AEW under the name Mariah May. She had a standout run, especially during her heated rivalry with Toni Storm. Their feud delivered one of AEW’s most talked-about storylines and culminated in a Hollywood Ending match at AEW Revolution.
After that successful run, she debuted in WWE NXT in June 2025 under the new ring name Blake Monroe. Speaking with Notsam Wrestling with Sam Roberts, Monroe reflected on the pressure of going from being labeled a match of the year wrestler to starting fresh in NXT.
She said, “I wouldn’t call myself a match of the year wrestler. I appreciate when people say that, but for me, I’m always like what can I do better?” She explained that WWE’s strong focus on women’s wrestling was a major reason for her move.
“One of the big reasons I wanted to come to WWE was because the women’s division is so deep. They really put an emphasis on their women. So that was a really attractive point for me. But also NXT, I wanted to train more.”
“I knew there were areas of my work that I wasn’t happy with and there were areas that I’m naturally good at.” Monroe also revealed that she specifically wanted to train more and improve her craft.
“We had a little bit of a conversation about it, but no, we never had to sit down and be like, ‘Hey you need to train or humble yourself.’ It’s sort of juts like they gave me my schedule, I guess it was kind of like, I wonder how she’s going to do and I turned up and they seemed really happy with that.”
She also addressed the expectations tied to her past success. “I mean it’s all about timing too with the whole match of the year thing. I think people expect that every match will be a match of the year. That doesn’t exist. It’s about time and story and the right partner.” [H/T: Wrestletalk]
Since arriving in WWE NXT, Monroe has continued to impress. In a short time, she has already captured the NXT Women’s North American Championship.
