Danhausen made his WWE debut at WWE Elimination Chamber, but new reports say the reaction backstage was divided.

WWE had teased a mystery crate a few weeks ago on RAW. At Elimination Chamber, Adam Pearce and Nick Aldis opened the crate near the stage. Inside was a wooden coffin. Danhausen came out of it with dancers wearing face paint. He even handed a jar of teeth to Michael Cole before the lights went out.

However, the Chicago fans gave a mixed reaction to his debut as many fans called it a flop. Speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer compared the debut to the Gobbledy Gooker.

He questioned how Danhausen fits into WWE’s current style under Paul Levesque. “I mean, it was the Gobbledy Gooker. That’s what it was. They finally managed to do another Gobbledy Gooker. We’ll see.”

“It’s a weird one, because with Paul Levesque, the way he books, I don’t see where this guy fits in. He could do the R-Truth thing, but they have R-Truth. You don’t need two R-Truths. I know he’s not the same thing, but it’s just sort of that gimmick mascot guy that doesn’t wrestle.”

“Because there’s no upside for him to do wrestling matches. Him going and doing his shtick might get over. It’s WWE, on paper I would have thought that it would for a while, and then it would just become commonplace and then it wouldn’t mean much. But who knows.”

Dave Meltzer says WWE was split on Danhausen signing

“If they put him in the ring on a regular basis it would be… they won’t. He’s not their kinda guy. Not saying he’s bad, but in this day and age, to get regular TV appearances, you’ve got to either be an awesome talker – which, he’s a gimmick talker – or you have to be really freakin’ good in the ring, or be a big muscular dude, and he doesn’t fit that.”

Meltzer also noted that the decision to sign him was not unanimous. Some people supported the move, while others were against it. People pushed for him, and there were people who didn’t want him. This was not a unanimous decision or anything like that.”

“I would guess that the people who didn’t want him are thinking, ‘Hmm, sure didn’t work out so well this time.’ But in time, time will tell. He’ll get another chance. Maybe he’ll be the Gobbledy Gooker and maybe he’ll be R-Truth – one or the other.” [H/T: Wrestletalk]

It will be interesting to see how the company uses Danhausen, especially since reports have confirmed that he has signed a multi-year contract.
