Road Dogg has reportedly left his role on the WWE creative team.

WWE Hall of Famer Road Dogg (Brian James) has worked in several backstage roles during various stints with the company since 2011. It was reported in February 2025 that James was promoted to the role of head writer of SmackDown. According to new reports, James is no longer in that role, as he recently stepped down.

According to PWInsider.com, Road Dogg chose to leave his position on WWE’s creative team.

“WWE Hall of Famer Road Dogg Brian James left World Wrestling Entertainment today, PWInsider.com has learned. The word making the rounds is that he made the decision to leave his position on the company’s creative team, where he had been working on the Smackdown brand.”

Road Dogg has a long history as a WWE backstage and creative employee

No other details about his departure were reported by PWInsider.com. However, Bodyslam (via Bodyslam+) is reporting that WWE is going through some “shakeups” on its creative and writing teams.

After his full-time in-ring career wrapped up, Road Dogg joined WWE in a backstage role as a writer in 2011. He briefly returned to the ring for a reunion with Billy Gunn as the New Age Outlaws before resuming his backstage role as writer and producer. Road Dogg previously stepped down from his role on the creative team in 2019. However, he stayed with WWE as a coach during this time. He was released from that role in 2022, but reached an agreement to return later that year.
