John Cena‘s heel run in WWE didn’t go the way fans would have thought, and according to Cena, he believes it failed partly right out of the gate.

During an appearance at Fan Expo Chicago (via Popverse), Cena reflected on his very first appearance following his heel turn. The appearance came in Belgium, at an episode of WWE RAW in March, in a moment that Cena says he “bombed.”

“I wasn’t upset. No, I failed,” Cena said of his first promo. “Ain’t nothing wrong with that. You can learn from failure, right? I went up there and bombed. Shit happens.”

Cena’s heel turn was initially hailed as one of the most shocking moments in WWE history. Unfortunately, the moment never materialized into much. Not only did the WWE crowd never lean fully into “hating” Cena as a heel, but the entire story — which also centered around The Rock — seemed to fall apart immediately.

Cena refused to talk about it much when asked, though, saying he would after he retired. Instead, though, he’s focused on the 11 dates of appearances he has left.

The heel run ended abruptly last month, when Cena announced he was dropping the act. Reports on the storyline have since noted that things fell apart when The Rock felt he was no longer needed. With no faction for Cena to go heel with, he was left performing the role on his own.
