Cody Rhodes Stuns Gunther in Controversial Finish at WWE Clash in Italy
Cody Rhodes is still WWE Champion, but he got the win thanks to a fairly controversial pin attempt at the end.
Gunther challenged Rhodes for the Undisputed WWE Championship at WWE Clash in Italy on Sunday afternoon. Gunther looked strong in the beginning, but Cody fought back and looked to put the Ring General away.
Cody hit the Cody Cutter and Cross Rhodes, but Gunther rolled towards the apron. Gunther got his foot under the rope and thought it was enough to break the pin attempt, but Rhodes hooked his leg and rolled back as the referee counted to three.
Gunther was clearly upset as the replay showed that he did have his foot under the ropes, which should have broken the pin attempt. However, the referee was out of position and didn’t see it, which meant the result stands.
Considering the controversial nature of the finish, it’s easy to speculate that Gunther will have something to say about the result, and it seems likely that a rematch might happen down the line.
