The Rock Reflects On Heartbreaking Falling Out With His Dad Before He Passed
The Rock has opened up about the painful final chapter of his relationship with his father, WWE Hall of Famer Rocky Johnson.
Speaking on the Artist Friendly with Joel Madden, The Rock talked honestly about his complicated bond with his father, Rocky Johnson. He explained that his father did not want him to become a professional wrestler.
When he first told Johnson that he wanted to try wrestling, his father strongly pushed back. Johnson warned him about how tough the business was and said he didn’t want his son living the same hard life he had lived.
At the time, Johnson was struggling financially and felt wrestling brought more pain than reward. Although his words came from love, The Rock admitted that he didn’t understand that back then. Instead, he felt frustrated and believed he needed to choose his own path.
Looking back now, The Rock realizes his father was trying to protect him. But at the time, their disagreement created distance between them that never fully healed. But at the time, their disagreement created distance between them that never fully healed.
The most painful moment came shortly before Rocky Johnson’s death. The Rock revealed that the two had a massive argument during Christmas in 2019. He said, “We got into this huge fight Christmas 2019… it was awful. One of the biggest fights we ever got into about some just some stupid [stuff]… and then about a month later, he passed away. And we weren’t talking.”
The situation became even more heartbreaking when The Rock shared that he missed a final phone call from his father just days before his passing. He said, “He called me, and I didn’t take the call… I was at my kid’s game. I thought, ‘I’ll call him back.’ And then like a day or two later, he’s gone.” [H/T: ewrestlingnews]
Rocky Johnson passed away on January 15, 2020, at the age of 75. He was a trailblazer in professional wrestling, best known as one-half of the first African American team to hold the WWF World Tag Team Championship.
