WWE Star Says ‘Is Wrestling Fake?’ Question ‘Drives Me Nuts’ After Breaking Multiple Bones

WWE Women’s Champion Chelsea Green has addressed one of the questions she finds most frustrating about professional wrestling.
Green discussed the subject during a new interview with PIX11 News. Here, she was asked about the common perception that professional wrestling is “fake.”
The WWE star pointed to the physical risks involved in her profession. She noted that she has suffered multiple injuries this year. Green specifically referenced breaking her ankle in two places and suffering a broken orbital bone.
Green suffered the orbital bone injury on the August 7 episode of SmackDown, when she teamed with Tiffany Stratton against Fatal Influence. The match came just days after Green won the WWE Women’s Championship at SummerSlam.
Chelsea Green Fires Back At ‘Is WWE Fake?’ Question After Breaking Ankle, Orbital Bone
“Well, I think, you know, the first question everyone has about wrestling is, ‘Is it fake?’ That drives me nuts because I am putting my body on the line on live television every single week,” Green said.
“Just this year alone, I broke my ankle in two places and my orbital bone. So, I mean, no.”
Green then compared professional wrestling with other forms of entertainment, questioning why audiences treat wrestling differently when performers in other fields also portray characters or perform scripted material.
“When somebody wants to ask, is this fake? Like, let’s just take a second to think about, would we ask a soap actress if that’s fake or would we ask a stunt performer?” Green said.
“Would we go to a live show and would we ask them? No, it’s not. What we’re doing is, it’s very much real. It’s very much dangerous. It’s very much we put our bodies on the line for your entertainment. Just enjoy it. It’s not that serious.”
Green also pointed to one of the basic physical demands of performing in a wrestling ring.
“I mean, you can’t fake jumping off the top rope,” Green said. “There has to be a level of insanity that we have within us.”
The injury initially put Green’s championship status in doubt. On the following week’s SmackDown, General Manager Nick Aldis told Green she would have 30 days to get medically cleared rather than immediately vacating the championship.
Green ultimately returned to action and continued her title reign. She was most recently seen in action on the September 25 episode of SmackDown, teaming with Stratton and Paige against Fatal Influence.
