WWE is coming up with another show that will give a sneak peek into the backstage magic of SmackDown. However, there is a twist. This time, the focus is not on the superstars. Instead, the spotlight is on the referees who help keep everything under control inside the ring.

WWE SmackDown referee Dan Engler has announced a new reality-style series called The Refs, which will follow the lives of WWE referees backstage and on the road.

WWE SmackDown referees launch new reality-style show

Engler shared the news on social media on May 15, 2026, and his funny description grabbed fans’ attention. He wrote-

“Coming soon: The Refs — a new show following the lives, fights & flights, bad decisions & nonstop antics of the referees of #WWE #SmackDown.

They keep the superstars under control… barely.

Now who’s keeping THEM under control?

#TheRefs #WWERefs #ComingSoon”

The video features fast-paced, comedic clips of referees running, dancing, fighting, and handling ring gear in a warehouse and arena, including some TikTok dance moves by Daphanie LaShaunn and the entire referee group.

The cast will include several familiar WWE officials, including Dan Engler, Charles Robinson, Jason Ayers, Daphanie LaShaunn, Ryan Tran, and a few others.

Charles Robinson is one of the senior referees in wrestling history. Fans know him as “Little Naitch” because of his resemblance to Ric Flair. Dan Engler is another senior name who has also etched his name in wrestling folklore. Before WWE, he worked in TNA Wrestling as Rudy Charles and became known as one of the company’s top referees.

Beyond the personalities, The Refs is expected to show fans how difficult the referee job really is in WWE. According to the announcement, the show will mainly follow the backstage lives of SmackDown’s referee team. Instead of just being background figures during matches, it will highlight their friendships, travel struggles, mistakes, funny moments, and the pressure that comes with the job.

With WWE continuing to expand its behind-the-scenes programming through shows like WWE LFG and WWE: Unreal, The Refs could become another fun and interesting project for fans who want to see more of wrestling beyond the cameras.
