Stephen A. Smith Says WWE Talked To Him About On-Air Role
Stephen A. Smith as an on-air WWE personality? The First Take host says WWE did approach him about it.
Monday’s episode of ESPN First Take featured Joe Tessitore breaking down the WrestleMania 42 match card. During the conversation, Tessitore mentioned Pat McAfee’s recent actions and alliance with Randy Orton. Smith actually said he supports McAfee getting involved in the Cody Rhodes and Randy Orton feud, and shared that WWE’s Nick Khan pitched him on a similar role.
“I love it. I love it, and I want to applaud Pat McAfee for that, because let me tell you something. They were talking to—I go back to the old days of Bobby ‘The Brain’ Heenan and people like that,” Stephen A. Smith explained. “I actually wanted to do that. Your man Nick Khan talked to me about that. See, the difference is, I’m not as courageous as Pat McAfee. I ain’t trying to get hit by one of them big boys, at all! I want no part of it, but I love that stuff because I think the sport needs it.”
During the show, Tesstiore said he could see Smith managing someone like Gunther. Smith, however, said he sees himself with someone like Roman Reigns.
Cody Rhodes says Pat McAfee should learn to turn things down
McAfee’s involvement in the Cody Rhodes-Randy Orton WrestleMania 42 program has drawn massive criticism amongst fans. Many believe McAfee’s involvement is a poor excuse to advertise WrestleMania tickets that takes focus off the world title match between Orton and Rhodes.
Rhodes himself weighed in on McAfee’s insertion on Matt and Shane’s Secret Podcast.
“You know [the meme of] the troop is all outside and there’s that clown, right? I’m not saying he’s the clown in that regard. It’s just an interesting fit,” Rhodes continued. “And we’re going to see where it goes. You can’t have that much success and be ground up like he is without being a serious person and having been to the Thunderdome. What I would say is right now, what I’ve seen is everyone around Pat McAfee, his orbit, probably someone needs to say no every now and then. We were talking about Bob Holly earlier. You need that one guy in the room to be like, ‘I don’t know, man. Jumping into the WrestleMania main event?'”
Check out what else Rhodes had to say about McAfee’s schtick being a poor impersonation of a WWE Legend here.
