Rusev Says Infamous WWE Angle Wasn’t His Favorite, But He ‘Understood It’
Rusev has opened up about the infamous WWE angle involving Lana and Bobby Lashley, admitting it was not his favorite angle.
Back in 2019, WWE began a angle where Lana began a on-screen affair with Lashley. She claimed her marriage to Rusev was unhappy. The angle gained even more attention when Lana and Lashley’s wedding ceremony was interrupted by Liv Morgan. Morgan who returned with a new look revealed a secret romantic connection with Lana.
While the storyline created major buzz, the planned payoff never happened. It was meant to lead to a WrestleMania match, but that match never happened. Recently, former WWE United States Champion Rusev recently explained why he was not a big fan of the storyline but he understood the bigger plan.
Rusev Reflects On Controversial Lana–Bobby Lashley Storyline
Speaking on Insight with Chris Van Vliet, Rusev revealed that WWE originally pitched the angle to him as a build toward a WrestleMania match. “Oh, WrestleMania match. That’s how it was pitched to me. I said, ‘Great. I can deal with it.’ We just never got there.”
However, the match never took place. Rusev explained that the COVID-19 pandemic and his release from WWE prevented the storyline from reaching its intended conclusion. “It was a good story, man. Like, I understood the story.”
“It was not like it’s my favorite story, but I understood it. And when they told me what the final goal was, I said, ‘All right, that sounds good to me.’ You know, we have a direction, we have a dip, we have a comeback, we have a good story to finish it.”
Rusev also addressed the awkward position of watching his real-life wife share romantic scenes on television. “It’s acting, bro. It’s nothing else. Like all these Hollywood people and it’s not like she’s the only one. How many other WWE female superstars have made out with so many people? It’s just part of the business.”
“So you can’t if you start selling it, if you start like, ‘Oh,’ then yeah, of course it’s going to go bad for you. But as long as you treat it as just work, yeah, it’s nothing else than just work.”
