John Cena Confirms All Of The Pivots During His Retirement Tour
John Cena admits that his WWE retirement tour didn’t exactly go according to plan.
The last year of John Cena’s career has been a rollercoaster ride of emotions for the WWE Universe. With his last match taking place this weekend at Saturday Night’s Main Event, we are now hearing from Cena just how many pivots took place during his retirement tour.
WWE Superstar John Cena was a recent guest on The Pat McAfee Show. When asked about apologizing for writing up AJ Styles’ introduction at Crown Jewel earlier this year, Cena made it clear that the apology was a deliberate choice and that no one had forced him to do it.
“The apology was by choice,” John Cena said. “I was forced by no one. It’s something I had to do. I just didn’t feel right. Had I asked permission to do it, I’m more than likely I would have been allowed, or certainly I would have taken it. I’m always in search of a good explanation. Somebody says no and then gives me a good explanation. Well, that’s no.
“If someone has a suggestion and gives me a good explanation, that’s fine. And a lot of my creative path and just adapting to the cards that are dealt is because they get dealt with a good explanation, and I don’t really care about, and I said this on Chris [Van Vliet] as well, like, yeah, we can sit here and chatter about what could have been, or we can react to what is. And we can go like hell to make what is great.”
John Cena would rather focus on what happened instead of what didn’t
Despite his retirement tour not going according to plan, Cena was steadfast in his belief he’d rather focus on what happened instead of what didn’t.
“And what I love about the whole year. Now, this is something we can reflect on. The whole year was an intentional year-long story,” John Cena said. “Some moments folks liked, some moments they hated. Some moments wished to pan out different, but that’s like a microcosm of someone’s existence.
“We go through 23 years of John Cena in the WWE. Man, I wish some moments were different. I wish you had this opponent more because of the magic you had. Why did they ever book you in this angle? Why did you ever do this? It is a microcosm for what I’ve done. I love the fact that, at least through it all again, a small microcosm of my reality. Fans loved it and hated it, just like me. Let’s go see Cena. Cena sucks.
“This last year has been like a compacted version of, let’s go Cena. Cena sucks. And then the realization of, it’s almost not me, it’s like all of us. We’re all just kind of getting all of our emotions out. And I’m getting way too deep, and I never put a lot of focus on what could have been. If somebody chooses to bail, or we no longer have this option? That’s fine.
“The easiest indicator of this, and this happens all the time, is injury. And injury is easy because it’s inarguable. Hey, this person is on the trajectory to be the man, blown-out knee. We’re gonna have to have them forfeit their spot. Somebody’s gonna have to jump in. Nobody complains about that. What if somebody’s burnt out? What if somebody just can’t go? Or what if somebody decided that, like, yo, I don’t have the passion for it anymore.
“Would I rather keep that person on my team or just take a rest? Let’s put somebody with passion and purpose in there and see what happens. But I’m not gonna sweat, like, oh, but we could have done great stuff. You take the time you need to get right in your own brackets, and if you never come back into our gravity, thanks for all you did for us. But let’s move forward, man. Let’s move forward.”
So many big John Cena moments this year were pivots
Cena would end things by revealing just how many things took place this year that were pivots and not initially part of the plan.
“And I love the fact that there’s been so many pivots,” John Cena continued. “AJ, that was a pivot. You know, Brock was a pivot. Post WrestleMania, all that stuff, pivot. Because of the pivot. I got Randy, I got Punk, I got to work with Logan in a singles match because of the pivot, I got Dom, I got AJ, I got Ron Cena, I got Sami Zayn, I got Cody at SummerSlam. Because of pivots, I got all these great moments. Never once was that like, but it could have been this. You know, look what we got.”
One thing that likely wasn’t a pivot is Cena’s final opponent being Gunther. News of this match first broke several months ago, by WRKD Wrestling.
WrestleZone will have live coverage of John Cena’s last match at WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event later this weekend.
