Mike Mondo is focused on representing the NWA National Championship the way it should be.

Mondo recently spoke with WrestleZone Managing Editor Bill Pritchard about his reign as NWA National Champion. Mondo, who has also worked for WWE in the past, is proud of the work he’s done as champion so far. Now, his goal is to represent the title and put it in the spotlight it deserves.

“I feel like I’ve been doing a fantastic job. I’m such a proud champion, and I’m really proud to carry this title. As you said, it has a lot of lineage behind it and a legacy built by the people who came before me. I’m going to make sure I do my due diligence to carry and represent this championship the way it’s supposed to be represented from now into the future,” Mondo said.

Ted DiBiase, Jack Brisco, and Dusty Rhodes are some of the names who carried the title in the past and created its legacy. Mondo also highlighted that recently, names like EC3, Aaron Stevens, and current NWA Champion Silas Mason held the same title, which later propelled them to NWA World Heavyweight Championship.

“And now, here we are. I am your current NWA National Champion, and my résumé speaks for itself,” Mondo stated. “I believe I’m one of the best in the business today, and I’m going to make sure this title is secured for the future in terms of how the company views it and how it’s supposed to be represented.”

Mondo said his title win at NWA 77 was special for several reasons, including having the match on Long Island. His family got to share in his big win, which he says “gave me some extra fuel to go in there and put on the show of a lifetime.”

Mike Mondo comments on NWA/AEW National Title controversy

The “National Championship” was recently a source of controversy, as AEW debuted a title under that name. Mondo and other NWA talent like Bryan Idol took issue with the name of AEW’s new title. The former maintained a respectful position; he didn’t disparage AEW and said he was the legitimate (and only) National Champion.

During his interview with WrestleZone, Mondo explained the main issue he had with AEW’s introduction of its own National Championship and said he still stands by his initial remarks.

“Companies are going to create titles — and that’s fine. I have no problem with that. My only disconnect was when (AEW) were on air talking about bringing back the National Championship,” Mondo explained. “They dropped the NWA name, went into the lineage behind the title, and said they were bringing back the National Championship, when the reality and the facts are that this championship never went away to begin with. It’s always been here, and it’s been back for years.

“So I stand by my statement on Twitter: this is the legitimate championship with the lineage they were describing, and it’s owned, active, and still going today in the company where it was born to begin with, the NWA,” he continued. “This title is still going strong, and I’m proud to carry it. I’m going to carry it with honor and dignity, and I’ll defend it anytime I get the chance because I’m a fighting champion. That’s just who I am. The future of the NWA is your National Champion — me, Mike Mondo. Because I always say: it’s my time, it’s Mondo time, and it’s going to be gut-check time.”

What does 2026 hold for the NWA?

The National Wrestling Alliance has made tremendous strides in recent years, including securing a broadcast deal on The Roku Channel. Mondo praised NWA owner Billy Corgan’s business acumen and said he’s proud to be on the journey. He wants to make sure the NWA gets a return on the investment they made in him. Mondo also believes there’s no ceiling for the promotion’s success.

“I want to contribute to the team. We have a hell of a roster and a great backstage environment. And I want to be one of the guys who holds up his end of the deal. They signed me for a reason — they saw value in me. They’re investing in me, and I want to make sure they get a return on that investment,” Mondo said.

Mondo remains excited for the future and hopes a TV deal is in the NWA’s future. He says they have the talent in the ring and backstage. As long as the promotion keeps growing and putting in the work, it will be a success.

“With Billy, I have that open-door policy. He’s great for bouncing ideas off, expressing how you feel, and building a real relationship. He’s helped elevate my confidence in promos because he knows how to tap into the Mondo brain when we do vignettes and stuff like that,” Mondo added. “I’m really excited for the future. I’m excited to see where everything goes. I don’t think there’s a ceiling on our success — we can keep growing.”
