Bully Ray Explains The ‘Simple’ Story Behind Controversial End To Team 3D Retirement Match

Bully Ray sheds light on his tables match finish from TNA Bound For Glory.
The saga of The Hardy Boyz vs. Team 3D has officially come to an end after the former sent Bully Ray crashing through a table at TNA Bound For Glory. However, as many fans have pointed out, the ending itself didn’t come without an emotional sequence of events.
With Devon lying motionless after Jeff Hardy nailed him with a Swanton Bomb from atop a ladder, Bully Ray found himself alone in the ring, exhausted. Standing across the ring were Matt and Jeff, each equipped with chairs. When Bully shook his head as a sign of accepting defeat, though, the brothers dropped the chairs and put him through a table instead.
“The story of the finality is simple… ‘Live by the Table…Die by the Table,'” Bully later wrote on X.
Prior to this, many fans had compared this Bound For Glory match ending to that of Shawn Michaels vs. Ric Flair at WrestleMania 24, where the former famously said “I’m sorry, I love you” to the latter before delivering a Sweet Chin Music. This action marked the end of Flair’s WWE in-ring career (though he returned to action in TNA). According to Matt Hardy, The Hardy Boyz vs. Team 3D finish was not intended to imitate that of Michaels and Flair.
“This match def consisting of strong storytelling. It wasn’t meant to be a Flair/HBK finish, it had our own personal spin on it,” Matt wrote. “Not to be disrespectful towards the rest of the amazing roster on this show, but this is the match that set the new attendance record. People cared about the Hardy/Dudley rivalry. Doesn’t matter what internet nobodies say on social media, The Hardy Boyz sell tickets in 2025.”
In launching Bully through a table, Matt and Jeff retained both the TNA World and NXT Tag Team Championships.
