Bishop Dyer Is Wrestling For The Love And Fun Of It, Not Money

Bishop Dyer isn’t letting money be a deciding factor in where his wrestling career goes next.
Dyer recently spoke with WrestleZone Managing Editor Bill Pritchard about his plans in pro wrestling after leaving WWE. At the time of his release, the former Baron Corbin expressed his desire to compete in Japan. Dyer said he’s still working on setting that up. He also believes competing in MLW against names like Satoshi Kojima can help facilitate that.
“There are a lot of factors that go into it. I think originally I had a conversation with one of the guys, Rocky [Romero], who really helps facilitate talent to New Japan. And he’s like, ‘Hey man, we’re really interested. We just don’t know if we can afford you.’ And I was like, ‘Well, we’ve never discussed money. And I’m not doing this for the money right now.’ I’m doing it to wrestle people around the world who I’ve not gotten a chance to step in the ring with, with different companies around the world.”
Dyer said his time in WWE blessed him in building his lifestyle to a point where he can be more selective about bookings. He also hopes that the relationship with MLW and companies like New Japan and CMLL will help prove his worth and earn more opportunities that he wants.
“It helps me build my name and my status with those companies,” Dyer said. “When they see me working with these guys, [they’ll say] ‘This dude is not an egomaniac. He’s not going to be a guy that wants the first-class treatment all the way through. He likes to wrestle, and he wants to go around the world and do it.’”
Bishop Dyer knows he’s lucky to be in the situation he is in
Bishop Dyer knows that talking about payouts can still be taboo in pro wrestling circles. However, it’s not something he understands. He knows that economically, Japan has seen its challenges, so they don’t have the resources to pay talent like it used to. However, he also understands that he can turn down smaller shows that might not draw. Dyer pointed out how he also has to factor in time away from home and his family.
“You do have to go, ‘Okay, well, what’s it worth?’ And to me, the experience, and I’ve worked in Japan a few times already, with WWE obviously. The culture, the people, the fan base, I love that. So, to me, to sacrifice money a little bit to go have that experience is worth it to me for that. Now, I’m not going to go do a show in Debuque, Iowa, for 150 people. Because that’s where we have the discussion of, ‘I’m leaving home. I’m leaving my kids, my family. Is it really worth X amount of dollars for me to fly into Iowa City and drive to this small town and do a show there?’”
Dyer considers himself lucky that he gets to choose his own schedule, where money is not as much of a factor. He praised MLW for taking care of everything, from travel to food and accommodations, calling them an “A+ run company.”
“For how many years, I was making WWE paychecks, but that allowed me to be in this situation,” Dyer said. “That’s not the deciding factor if I’m going to come wrestle for you; the dollar amount is not the decider. It’s how you are treated, it’s how the company is run, it’s the talent on the roster,. It’s the getting to experience the long list of superstars that MLW has to offer, and getting in the ring with those new guys. To me, [that] is worth more than just asking for more money to go do it for money. I’m doing it more now out of love and fun than anything.”
