Mark Briscoe Reveals How 2Pac Influenced His Change In Attitude In AEW

Mark Briscoe is getting used to being a singles wrestler and continues to get a hold on the persona he wants to present.
Briscoe recently spoke with WrestleZone about his family’s new documentary, Two In One: The Briscoe Story. The project is a collaboration between AEW and The Player’s Tribune and details how the Pugh family has attempted to heal in the wake of Jay Briscoe’s (Jamin Pugh) untimely passing in an auto accident in 2023.
Mark told WrestleZone’s Bill Pritchard that it’s taken some time for him to get acclimated to being a singles wrestler. Mark couldn’t see himself continuing as a regular tag team wrestler without his brother, and told fans during the 2023 Continental Classic that he considered that to be his rookie year as a singles competitor. He’s finding his way as a singles wrestler, noting that he’s starting to get comfortable in the ring.
Mark Briscoe is finally finding his way as a singles wrestler in AEW
“It was so easy to spice up a tag match and to just put creative, cool things in a tag match that would just grab the people more so than somebody who didn’t have quite the experience with tag team wrestling. In singles matches, I’m starting to get comfortable, I’m starting to get more of. You got to pace yourself different in a singles match,” Briscoe said. “In tag team action, you go out there guns blazing until you are out of ammo, you tag out to your boy. And you go reload while he does the same thing. That was kind of me and Jay a lot of times that was kind of our pace. That was our tempo of how we did it.
“Now, in singles action, you just can’t go out there guns blazing right from the first ding ding ding. Because you are going to run out of ammo before you want to run out of ammo. And you gonna be in trouble,” he added. “I’m getting my foot in as a singles guy, especially, some of the matches with Kyle Fletcher and then working against Ricochet. And now, this whole thing with MJF man, it’s kind of taking a little dip over into personal territory. So, it’s likely to be the most entertaining thing yet, because I’m really looking forward to getting my hands on it.”
The Briscoes are known as one of the best and most violent tag teams in Ring Of Honor history. Their promos were fear-inducing, but Mark and Jay were also known to have a lighter side. Many AEW fans have seen Mark show more humor in his work, especially during his tenure with the Conglomeration stable.
Mark Briscoe reacts to MJF bringing out a more serious side of him
Briscoe was asked if MJF has been the spark that brought out a new fire in him. Instead, he credited the late Tupac Shakur for serving as inspiration. Shakur was quoted as saying that his music didn’t glorify any image, and it was all about emotion. Now, Briscoe highlighted how the late rapper’s words explain how he could portray so many different roles convincingly.
“I can’t remember [the exact quote], but his reply was, ’Some of my songs are, they gonna make you happy, they gonna make you dance. Some of my songs are, they gonna make you wanna fight. Some of my songs are going to put you in a chill mood, maybe go hang out with your girl or something,’” Briscoe explained. “[Tupac] had so many different places where his music would take you because he said, ‘There are moments when I’m mad. There’s moments when I’m happy. There are moments when I want to fight, there’s moments when I want to cry. So, depending on when and how I was feeling when I wrote this song, that’s what you are going to get from it.’
“And to me, that’s kind of like me and my professional wrestling career,” Briscoe continued. “I mean, we can have fun, absolutely. We can have fun [with the] Conglomerate, and just hoot and holler, and all that. And laugh. And all that. But we can absolutely, when it’s business time and when it ain’t no laughing matter, we can get as serious as we need to get. So, yeah. I could absolutely see here, moving forward with the MJF thing, depending on how things go. You know, I can’t call it. I can’t predict or see into the future. But just know that the game-time serious Mark Briscoe is always right here.”
Mark Briscoe and MJF will face off in the main event of tonight’s new episode of AEW Dynamite. This week’s show takes place at the Wolstein Center in Cleveland. Check out our full interview with Mark Briscoe below:
