Rossy Ogawa Reacts To Mayu Iwatani Joining Marigold
Mayu Iwatani is here to stay in Marigold.
Earlier this month, Mayu Iwatani left STARDOM to join Dream Star Fighting Marigold, citing her desire become a professional wrestling icon. Additionally, Iwatani hopes to square up with IYO SKY, Kairi Sane, and Giulia, wrestlers contracted to Marigold’s working partner, WWE.
In a new interview with Sports Graphic Number, Marigold founder and former STARDOM promoter Rossy Ogawa addressed Iwatani’s arrival in Marigold.
“No matter what you do, there will always be people who say something. Some might say, ‘Wasn’t this decided long ago?’ But that is a foolish question. She properly announced her departure [from STARDOM],” Ogawa said (H/T to MeraWrestling for the translation.) With the current contract system, when the contract expires, it’s over. It’s not like they’re going to use the wrestler forever or look after them. Iwatani said, ‘Marigold is family, and STARDOM is a company.’
“In STARDOM, where there are many wrestlers just fulfilling their roles, Iwatani probably ran out of things to do,” Ogawa continued. “Of course, there were probably attempts to persuade her to stay, but nothing stimulated her motivation anymore. The conditions would probably have been better if she was in STARDOM. She’d get a salary, there would be less work, and it’d be easier. But because there are so many wrestlers, it’s hard to tell if someone leaves. Even if you’re just one of several top wrestlers, it’s no good if you’re not always at the center of attention.”
In her 14 years with STARDOM, Iwatani racked up an expansive collection of titles, including the World of STARDOM Championship. In addition, she enjoyed reigns as Artist and Goddesses of STARDOM Champion. Since coming aboard Marigold, she is undefeated, with her latest win coming alongside fellow STARDOM alum Utami Hayashishita in tag competition.
