Ilja Dragunov’s AEW Future Becomes Clearer With New Update — Report
There’s a new update on Ilja Dragunov’s potential AEW debut.
Former United States Champion Ilja Dragunov left WWE after his contract expired in August. Since then, fans have speculated about his potential AEW debut, and members of the promotion, including President Tony Khan, have commented on the possibility.
Amid all the talk, Fightful reported earlier this week that Ilja Dragunov is expected to sign with AEW. However, the report noted that both sides are still working on some final details.
A new report says Ilja Dragunov “should be starting very soon” at AEW
F4WOnline‘s Dave Meltzer provided a new update on Ilja Dragunov’s future in the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter. He confirmed that Dragunov has signed a contract with AEW and will be starting “very soon.”
“As has been expected, Ilja Dragunov (Ilja Rukober, who turns 33 in a few weeks), has signed and should be starting very soon. This was pretty apparent in August the way Tony Khan was talking about him but as he noted with the New Level, these deals often take weeks to finalize. Obviously he’s a guy who can have great matches. But at this point they almost need more TV to facilitate such a large roster and keep people in the public eye,” Meltzer noted.
Former AEW TNT Champion Kyle Fletcher recently teased Ilja Dragunov’s AEW arrival by posting a photo of their 2019 match. During a social media exchange with a fan, Fletcher said he’s excited at the prospect of wrestling one of his old friends. He even described Dragunov as “Someone who has been underappreciated for years, will finally have the chance to spread his wings and create the professional wrestling he loves.”
