Matt Cardona has looked back on the first six months of his full-time return to WWE and shared a message with fans. Even though things haven’t gone the way he hoped on SmackDown, Cardona says he has braved through enough tough times before and has no plans to quit.

Cardona officially returned to WWE full-time on the January 2, 2026, episode of SmackDown. Before that, he had made several appearances. These included matches on NXT during WWE’s partnership with TNA and a one-night return as Zack Ryder during John Cena’s “Last Time is Now” tournament.

His first match back on SmackDown was a successful one. He answered Kit Wilson’s open challenge and won. Unfortunately for Cardona, that’s still his only singles victory since returning.

Since then, he’s gone 1-7 in singles matches on SmackDown, losing to both top stars and rising talent. The losing streak has even become part of his character. In recent weeks, Cardona has blamed his struggles on the “Danhausen Curse.” To avoid further misery, he has repeatedly asked Danhausen to lift the supposed curse so he can start winning again.

Matt Cardona remains hopeful with his WWE return

To mark six months since returning to WWE, Cardona posted an emotional message on social media. He reflected on his journey and reminded everyone that he is still chasing his goals. He tweeted:

“I’ve been back in @WWE for 6 months, after being gone for almost 6 years.

It’s been an uphill battle…I knew it would be. But my entire career has been that way.

Throughout my 23 years in this business, I’ve been counted out so many times…by “the office”, by the fans, and even by myself…but I always come back.

I’M NOT FINISHED.”

His losing streak has also led to speculation that WWE could eventually change his character. Some believe the frustration may push him toward a heel turn or another reinvention if things don’t improve.

For now, though, Cardona has made it clear that he isn’t thinking about leaving WWE and his goal hasn’t changed.
