AEW veteran Paul Wight has revealed that he is working hard for his in-ring return after spending more than two years recovering from multiple surgeries. Wight says he isn’t ready to retire and still wants to wrestle again.

Wight has been away from AEW due to several serious health issues. However, his latest update shows he’s making steady progress toward an in-ring comeback.

Paul Wight shares recovery update

Speaking with Joey Franchize, Wight talked about the long recovery process after undergoing several surgeries.

When asked about whether he has any intention to make an in-ring return, Wight replied, “Oh, yeah. I’m gonna do something in Clearwater.”

The 54-year-old said his workouts are no longer about lifting heavy weights. Instead, he is focused on rebuilding his strength, balance, and movement.

“All this is like we haven’t been in the ring, but we’ve been conditioning and training and pushing sleds and pulling sleds and doing all this stuff to get everything working again,” Wight said.

Wight revealed that he has had 11 surgeries over the last seven years, including knee replacements and a minor back surgery. He explained that these procedures affected the muscles around his left hip, making recovery much more challenging.

“And I’ve had 11 surgeries in seven years. So, a lot of different stabilizer muscles, especially on my left hip, got cut so many times. Trying to rebuild that mind-muscle connection. So, there’s a lot of balance and things I’m working on and getting that stuff better so I can get in the ring and play,” Wight added.

Even with all those setbacks, Wight says he has no plans to slow down.

“I haven’t gone through all this just to look pretty when I’m older; I have a plan. I have stuff I want to do, I want to do more wrestling, I have, you know, doing more films and TV and stuff. Like, I want to do stuff. I don’t want to sit on my butt and talk about how great I am. What’s today? What’s tomorrow? Let’s get going,” Wight said.

Paul Wight’s last match on AEW television was on the November 14, 2023, episode of Dynamite, where he competed in an eight-man Street Fight. Since then, Wight has focused completely on recovering from surgery.

Wight also confirmed that he recently signed a new contract with AEW. Although he doesn’t expect to chase championships when he returns, he has previously said he would love to wrestle Kenny Omega and Darby Allin.
