WWE’s Booker T On Worst Commentator Award: Dave Meltzer Is Sucking The Life Out Of Wrestling
Booker T doesn’t take being named the worst commentator as a knock, and he believes he knows where the animosity stems from.
The Wrestling Observer Newsletter‘s annual awards issue was published last week, and Booker T won the award for worst television announcer. The top five saw Pat McAfee, Michael Cole, Vic Joseph, and Booker T picked from WWE, while AEW’s Tony Schiavone was ranked fifth. Booker “won” the award with 516 votes, compared to 123 votes for McAfee, who was in second.
Booker T and Brad Gilmore addressed the snub on this week’s new episode of the Hall of Fame podcast. Gilmore ripped F4WOnline and the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, saying they’ve been doing a terrible job for years. He focused on Dave Meltzer and said that no matter how much time he spends in the gym, he still can’t work out his mind because he continues to say asinine things and statements that get proven false.
Gilmore asked Booker for his initial reaction to the award, and Booker laughed before getting into it. Booker said there’s no way Vic Joseph should be on any worst announcer list. You could make a case for Michael Cole since he’s been around for so long, but he’s still a great announcer. However, Joseph does so much work, and it’s a really hard job.
Booker T says he knows the real reason Dave Meltzer has beef with him
Booker said he doesn’t see the award as a personal knock, then revealed an incident with Meltzer that took place on one of Chris Jericho’s cruises.
“For an award like this to even be out there, it’s asinine. Because, there again, Dave Meltzer, or anyone at the Wrestling Observer, knows what it takes as far as what that job entails,” Booker T explained. “But he somehow finagled his way into being called a wrestling aficionado, a wrestling historian, whatever. And no dig on that or anything, but something like this is redundant. It makes no sense. Personally, I don’t take a knock, it’s just Meltzer taking a shot at me. Probably because of what happened on the Jericho Cruise. A lot of people don’t know that story, but I cornered Dave Meltzer and told him I would rip his ears right off of his body. That’s what I said.”
Booker said that if Meltzer saw him in public, Meltzer could go out of his way to avoid him. He continued by saying that hate is a strong word. However, he doesn’t have too many kind things to say about the Observer publisher.
Booker T believes Dave Meltzer is to blame, not his readers
“Hate is a really, really dark, evil, nasty word. And I don’t really want to go there, as far as saying I hate a person or anything like that. But Dave Meltzer is literally a scoundrel of an individual,” Booker T said. “He really is. He’s a guy that is sucking the life out of this business.”
Booker pointed out how “all of the awards” were won by AEW performers, which he said makes no sense. He gets that there might be some favoritism, but journalists are supposed to be unbiased. However, Booker said that he still appreciates people who came to his defense.
It’s worth noting that the WON Awards are voted on by readers, not by Meltzer or his staff. Booker went on to preface that he hopes one part of his message is clear: he places blame on Meltzer for creating this environment, not his followers.
“I don’t blame the students, I blame the teacher,” Booker T added.
Booker T has been met with plenty of support in recent days, including from AEW World Champion MJF, who said that Booker deserves more respect.
