WCW Had Plans For An Animated TV Series

It appears WCW wanted to appeal to a younger audience with an animated TV series during the Monday Night Wars.

World Championship Wrestling was involved in a heated ratings war with rival WWF during the 1990s. While WWE leaned into more mature themes, WCW generally maintained a lighter tone, with occasional shifts toward TV-14 content.

In 1999, Ted Turner’s former promotion explored the idea of producing an animated show aimed at kids. The proposed series, Chowda Heads, would have aired in segments during Nitro. But the idea was abandoned following Eric Bischoff’s firing from the company.

Chowda Heads was reportedly a collaboration between WCW and horror filmmaker Eli Roth. Another concept was also pitched, with Amberwood Productions developing a more traditional Saturday morning cartoon. That idea featured WCW wrestlers reimagined as action heroes battling monsters and cyborgs.

Bret Hart, who was signed to WCW at the time, reportedly even received a character design as part of the concept art. Ultimately, both projects were shelved due to the company’s internal chaos during WCW’s final years.

In a related development, WWE has been regularly posting WCW archive footage, including full events and matches, on the World Championship Wrestling YouTube channel. YouTube remains a key part of WWE’s digital strategy, with additional content expected to gradually roll out on the platform in 2026.
