John Cena Sr. weighs in on his son’s upcoming retirement match.

For months, former WWE World Heavyweight Champion Gunther has been rumored as the final opponent to 17-world champion John Cena, who is wrapping up his in-ring career at WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event on December 13. With a semi-finals win over Solo Sikoa in The Last Time Is Now tournament, Gunther is now one win away from making those reports a reality. According to John Cena Sr., though, the distinction of facing his son in the last match should belong to someone else

“Well, it certainly wouldn’t be GUNTHER, that’s for sure,” Cena Sr. told the All Axxess Podcast when considering his son’s potential final opponent. “I don’t think that’s a wise move. I don’t think the fans would enjoy that move. GUNTHER does not need the rub. And by the way, I’m not a fan of the whole ‘on the way out you’ve got to push somebody over the top’ idea. You’re supposed to pass the torch—but I don’t know if that’s written anywhere in professional wrestling.” (H/T to WrestlingNewsCo for the transcription)

In Cena Sr.’s eyes, the act of Cena Jr. passing the torch has already been done, with WWE SummerSlam night two as its stage.

“If we have to use that as an analogy, then he’s already done that with Cody Rhodes,” Cena Sr. said. “He beat him for the [world] title. He gave the title back. They embraced, Cody was teary-eyed. The torch was passed.”

To officially determine Cena Jr.’s last opponent, Gunther will battle LA Knight on next week’s episode of WWE Raw in the tournament finals. Cena Jr. and Gunther have yet to share a ring together.
