Matt Hardy Shuts Down Claim He Walked Back Remarks About WWE-TNA Partnership Hurting AEW
Matt Hardy isn’t changing his tune about anything; he’s just correcting a false narrative.
This week’s episode of the Extreme Life of Matt Hardy podcast saw Matt address Tony Khan’s recent interview with Ariel Helwani and the idea that the WWE-TNA partnership was designed to hurt AEW. Hardy’s name was mentioned during the new interview after Helwani mentioned that Hardy spoke about the topic in July. Helwani said that Hardy wasn’t being malicious about it, but agreed that WWE was trying to hurt AEW by working with TNA. Helwani didn’t directly quote Hardy, but paraphrased his original answer.
The day of Khan’s interview, Hardy shared a clip of the interview that he and Jeff did with Helwani. In that interview, which originally aired in July, Helwani asked if part of the reason the partnership existed was due to Vince McMahon not running WWE anymore. Matt responded, saying he believes part of it was just AEW existing.
“I would guess part of it is AEW and its existence,” Hardy told Helwani in July.
Helwani asked if it’s fair to say WWE was propping up TNA to give them an opportunity to block out AEW.
“I mean, I think that can obviously be a feasible option,” Hardy added.
“Do you think it’s working?” Helwani asked.
“It’s helping us,” Matt said. “I think it’s—TNA is a company that’s been around two decades, 20-plus years, and I think it’s an important staple in wrestling. They do a style that’s more similar to the WWE style, [so] I think it’s a good call. I think it’s a win-win for everybody.”
Matt Hardy says his words have been twisted by some people
Hardy addressed the attention that his comments got, including his words being miscontrued, on his podcast. Hardy told co-host Jon Alba that his words were manipulated in some way. Matt said that some people claimed he said the whole reason for the WWE-TNA partnership was to hurt AEW. However, as he pointed out, he restated that he believes the partnership might have happened just because AEW existed, more than anything else.
Hardy also responded to a post on Twitter/X that showed a headline that claimed he was “walking back” his original comments. Hardy took issue with the article and said he “haven’t walked back shit” and posted the same clip again, showing that his story never changed.
Khan said that he appreciates Matt and Jeff’s opinion, but said that he does think it’s on purpose. However, he understands it and noted that it’s been done throughout history.
