Mick Foley Reveals Failed Pitch For ‘Son Of Abyss’ In TNA
Now you’re messin’ with a… a son of Abyss?!? Yes, that’s what Mick Foley had in mind for a character while he was working for TNA.
Foley recently appeared on the Kayfabe Friends Wrestling Podcast, where he was asked by David Difference about how he would approach a pro wrestling debut today. Would he use one of his famed “Three Faces of Foley,” or would he use a new, never-before-seen character?
Foley framed his answer in two parts, with the latter revealing his failed pitch to introduce a new gimmick called “Son of Abyss.” The gimmick would have seen Foley play the kayfabe son of Abyss, but it was also a clever way to work a swear word onto television.
“The one character that got away from me, oh man. This was money. You can almost…the smell of money is still around. This was at a time when Hulk Hogan came into Impact Wrestling, and he took Abyss under his wing,” Foley explained (h/t SEScoops). “I wanted Hulk to have a man-to-man talk with Abyss and tell him that the way he had of expressing his love 18 years earlier had actually resulted in a child who would be revealed to be the Son of Abyss.
Mick Foley would’ve played the “son,” despite actually being nine years older than Abyss
“That’s me. Son of Abyss. I just imagined it like Abyss and a secret partner working against two of Eric Bischoff’s guys,” he continued. “I’d be the secret partner, come down in the Abyss mask. I just imagined Eric Bischoff in the middle of the ring going, ‘Son of Abyss, Son of Abyss.’ That’s where I have to say with all due respect to Austin 3:16, Steve, you’re darn lucky the Son of Abyss shirts never hit the market.”
Mick Foley worked for TNA from 2008–2011; the run included a reign as TNA World Champion.
For those wondering who he would debut as today, Foley says he would choose to debut as Cactus Jack.
