John Cena opens up about his early ventures in acting.

Nowadays, John Cena primarily dedicates himself to Hollywood, both in film and television. Years ago, though, fans knew Cena as the face of WWE. One of his responsibilities centered on bringing in more eyes to the company. During a recent appearance at Fan Expo in Denver, Colorado, Cena revealed that this task ironically led him to the Hollywood acting realm.

“I got run out of the movie business once for making too many bad movies. Then I got another chance. I’m very grateful for that,” Cena said. “I learned from my failures in the past, I was split two different ways. I was doing movies and I wanted to be in a wrestling ring, I was in my 20s, was world champion.

“Gosh, I really was just enjoying my life in WWE. I started to do movies to bring more business to WWE and that wasn’t the right path for me. And then I got a chance doing some movies as Fred’s dad. I got to live in a refrigerator and that was the first time that [Paramount Pictures CEO] Brian Robbins ever took a chance on me to laugh at myself and enjoy. After that, I realized that if I was going to commit at all to anything outside a WWE arena, I should do so with the passion I commit in that arena. So since then, every chance that somebody’s ever taken on me, I just want them to know that they’ll get my all and it’s been worthwhile.”

In his early acting work, Cena starred in The Marine, 12 Rounds, and Legendary. In 2010, he then portrayed Dad Figglehorn in Fred: The Movie. Appearances in Fred 2: Night of the Living Fred and Fred 3: Camp Fred followed.

Cena recently shared his favorite part of being in the Fred movies. Cena called it an interesting experience that he “remembers like it was yesterday.
