Jim Ross Diagnosed With Colon Cancer, Details His Next Steps

Jim Ross shared an unfortunate health update with his fans.
Ross announced he was diagnosed with colon cancer on Thursday. In a message posted on Twitter/X, Ross said he will have surgery in the “next week or two” and thanked fans for their support during this time.
“Diagnosed this week with colon cancer,” Jim Ross said on Twitter. “Surgery being scheduled in the next week or two. I appreciate your concern and support.”
Ross did not share any more details about his status. It is unclear how long Ross will be away from AEW after he has surgery.
Jim Ross previously said he hopes to stick with AEW
Jim Ross has worked for AEW since 2019. He was the lead play-by-play announcer on the inaugural episode of AEW Dynamite that year. However, he has taken on a more reduced role in recent years due to health issues. Ross announced he had skin cancer in October 2021, but later said he was cancer-free two months later. Ross had another surgery for cancer on his right hip in February 2024, but recently said in December 2024 his health had improved a great deal.
Jim Ross’ last commentary appearance for AEW came at the Dynasty pay-per-view in April. He previously addressed his contract status on his podcast and believed his current deal expires in August, but hopes to return to AEW.
“I don’t have any sense or feeling that I’m not going to be kept because of the schedule I do. I could maintain that for years to come, and I’m not saying that in a braggadocious fashion. This is what I do. This is what I was born to do,” Jim Ross said. “As long as my heart is beating and I’m still healthy—and right now, quite frankly, I’m healthier than I’ve ever been. Once this wound heals and it’s getting closer and closer, I’ll be 100%.”
