Sami Zayn’s WWE Title Win From CM Punk Faced Internal Pushback — Report
Sami Zayn’s second Undisputed WWE Championship win reportedly faced some internal opposition.
After his first title reign ended in nine days, Sami Zayn complained and caused mayhem for weeks. This finally got him a one-on-one shot at the Undisputed WWE Championship. He faced CM Punk for the title this past Friday on SmackDown in Mexico City.
The match turned out chaotic, with interference from Johnny Gargano and Kevin Owens. Sami Zayn capitalized on the chaos after Owens inadvertently hit CM Punk with the title belt and hit the Second City Saint with a helluva kick to win his second Undisputed WWE Championship.
Zayn didn’t wait long to boast over his accomplishment, as he took to X/Twitter to exclaim, “I AM THE WWE CHAMPION AGAIN.”
Backstage Reaction To Sami Zayn’s WWE Title Win
Dave Meltzer discussed Sami Zayn’s title win on the latest episode of Wrestling Observer Radio. He reported that WWE went ahead with the change for storyline reasons, which he was told would make sense once it fully plays out. He also noted there was internal opposition to putting the championship back on him. However, the company proceeded with the switch despite the pushback.
“With the Sami Zayn thing, the basic gist was they have a storyline that will make sense when you look back on it, is what I was told. When it’s all said and done this will all make sense. There was certainly people who were against it but they did it. And that was that,” Meltzer said about Zayn’s title win. [H/T SEScoops]
The WWE Championship picture is heating up with superstars like GUNTHER, Finn Balor, Kevin Owens, and Johnny Gargano wanting the next opportunity. Former champion CM Punk could also join the list and fans anticipate a multi-man match for the title at Money in the Bank next month.
