WWE Veteran Defends Jacy Jayne After Brie Bella’s SummerSlam Shoulder Injury

This WWE veteran believes Jacy Jayne was not at fault for the injury Brie Bella suffered at WWE SummerSlam Saturday.
Brie was injured during The Bellas and Paige’s six-woman tag team match against Fatal Influence. The injury reportedly occurred when Jayne delivered a cannonball onto the ringside steel steps. Despite the injury, the match continued. Paige taking the pinfall before The Bellas turned against her in a post-match attack.
Following the event, Brie was taken to a hospital and pulled from her scheduled SummerSlam meet-and-greet appearance. She later revealed that she had suffered a broken scapula and disclosed that the match was nearly stopped because of the injury.
Speaking on his podcast, The Stevie Richards Show, former WWE Hardcore Champion Stevie Richards defended Jayne and stressed that the move itself was executed correctly.
“There was no what went wrong with the way the girl delivered the cannonball. There was nothing wrong with that. I just feel like Brie tried to do… maybe she was protecting her head from hitting the steps. I don’t know, but it’s an honest mistake.”
Stevie Richards Explains The Safest Way To Take Cannonball After Brie Bella’s WWE SummerSlam Injury
He explained that the safest way to take the move is by staying body-to-body rather than turning sideways.
“I would really stress to be body to body in the center right here and not side to side. You might get squished a little bit. You might get the wind knocked out of you, but you’re not going to break any bones like that doing it on the stairs.”
He also pointed out that the steel steps eliminate the natural bounce wrestlers usually get when taking a cannonball, making the spot significantly more dangerous.
“It introduces a level of rigidity. It’s too rigid to where you can’t bounce off. Most people do the cannonball, they hit it and then they kind of bounce back to where they roll backwards. You don’t get that because there’s no bounce to this. That’s a hard thing to take.”
The WWE veteran reiterated that he did not believe Jayne made a mistake and suggested Brie may have instinctively adjusted her positioning to protect herself.
“It’s an honest mistake. Brie didn’t do anything wrong. I think she just tried to… and for all we know, did she take a headshot before this or anything to get into this position? She could be selling the back of her head off of that.”
