Bray Wyatt Wouldn’t Let His Father Call Him ‘Son’ In WWE Over Nepotism Concerns
Bray Wyatt once asked his father, WWE Hall of Famer Mike Rotunda, not to call him “son” at work because he was concerned about perceptions of nepotism.
Matt Hardy recalled the moment during a recent episode of The Extreme Life of Matt Hardy. While discussing his time working with Wyatt in WWE. Rotunda, who wrestled as Irwin R. Schyster, later worked behind the scenes as a producer.
“Something that comes to mind that I think about this is when Bray was around and I was working with Bray,” Hardy said. “So his dad at one point was an agent, right? He was a producer. When Mike Rotunda was there, IRS, his dad, and I remember there was something where they were talking about something.”
Hardy then recalled an exchange between Wyatt and Rotunda after a production meeting.
“He said, ‘Son, that’s not what they wanted you to do there.’ And he said, ‘Dad, you can’t call me that. You can’t call me that,’” Hardy recalled.
Bray Wyatt Didn’t Want His Father To Call Him ‘Son’ At Work
According to Hardy, Wyatt’s concern stemmed from how the interaction could look to others backstage, particularly because Rotunda was involved in producing WWE matches and segments.
“It was just such an intimate moment between them, but it was just like because he said, ‘Son,’ he called him back because there was something that he had been given to do in a production meeting,” Hardy explained.
“And then he was giving it back to his dad and then it wasn’t what they had said in the production meeting. His dad said, ‘Son, that’s not what they said.’ He’s like, ‘Dad, you can’t say that. You can’t say that.’”
Hardy noted that Wyatt was seemingly worried about people assuming that Rotunda was giving him preferential treatment simply because they were father and son.
“You know, just almost worried about once again that nepotism, you know, like, hey, well, this is his dad and his son and like he’s giving him info or whatever,” Hardy said. “Because that’s really a thing.”
Matt Hardy became involved in Bray Wyatt’s story with the “Broken” and “Woken” versions of his character before the two eventually became allies as part of The Deleters of Worlds.
The duo captured the WWE RAW Tag Team Championship at WrestleMania 34 in 2018 by defeating Cesaro and Sheamus. Their partnership eventually ended, and both went their separate ways.
Wyatt died on August 24, 2023, at the age of 36. His death shocked the wrestling world. Numerous wrestlers and colleagues remember him as an incredibly creative performer who left a lasting impact on WWE.
