Memphis City Council has renamed a street in honor of WWE Hall of Famer Jerry “The King” Lawler.

During its June 9 meeting, the Memphis City Council passed a resolution renaming Homer Street between Given and Rhea Avenues, near Treadwell Middle School in Memphis, in honor of legendary WWE wrestler and commentator Jerry Lawler.

The resolution was on the council’s consent agenda and passed with unanimous support from all council members. The date for the street renaming is yet to be announced.

Jerry Lawler (76) was born in Memphis, Tennessee, and began his wrestling career in 1970. Apart from being a WWE Hall of Famer, Lawler is also an actor, comic book illustrator, recording artist, and restaurateur with a Beale Street bar. He also ran for Memphis mayor in 1999, finishing third.

The WWE legend opens up about health struggles while living alone after a stroke

Speaking to Scott Johnson of Going Ringside at a wrestling convention, WWE legend Jerry Lawler provided an update on his recovery following knee replacement surgery.

“Doing fine. Doing great. Looking around, there’s this big crowd, and it’s awesome to see all these people here,” Lawler said. “I’m just sort of hobbling around right now. I just had a knee replacement, my right knee, and it’s doing good, but it’s a little bit hobbling here and there.”

While he said he’s recovering well, he admitted that living alone after suffering a stroke in September 2025 has been tough. He also previously suffered strokes in 2023 and 2018.

“I seem to be doing pretty well. People just see me like this, but at home, I live by myself, and it’s a little tough there right now, but it seemed to get, seemed to get better.” [H/T WrestlingNewsCo]

Speaking further, he noted that while he remains under a legends deal with the company, returning to commentary for WWE is unrealistic at this stage.
