Cody Rhodes says he’s not sure that he ever gets to “finish the story” with The Rock. Despite that, he could see it going down a few different ways.

Rhodes appeared on the Ariel Helwani Show ahead of his title defense at WWE Night of Champions. Rhodes was asked about finishing the story with The Rock, who hasn’t been seen in WWE since February 2025. Fans speculated that a match between The Rock and Rhodes could materialize after WrestleMania 40, but so far, it has not happened.

Rhodes took a moment to highlight how The Rock has become a major figure in his career, and called their feud an unfinished story. He wouldn’t go as far as saying it needs to be finished, but pointed out that some stories in wrestling often conclude without real closure.

“Hmm. Deep breath [exhales] Dwayne Johnson has become—I think it’s safe to say he’s a bit of a fixture in my career, my life. Not just for his ‘flag in the sand’ moment that was WrestleMania, and then the emergence of probably one of the better characters that we’ve only seen a little bit of it, The Final Boss,” Rhodes explained. “I don’t want to give it an absolute and say that we do have to settle that. But I think that it’s an unfinished story. There’s probably two unfinished stories that are out there, and they don’t always get finished. Wrestling, there’s a lot of fantasy booking, there’s a lot of ways, but there’s a lot that goes into it.”

Rhodes explained that one version of finishing that story sees him honoring The Rock by becoming a major success in Hollywood. The other, he says, might appeal more to a pro wrestling audience.

“Then there’s a version that’s probably more appealing to a wrestling fan, where the Final Boss shows back up and there is more ‘on the rose’ than a non-ending. So, I can’t answer that one. I think you’ll probably get the chance to talk to him.

“I can say as a wrestler, we get a little trepidacious, or we don’t get super excited when people tease he might be there or leak it, or drop something that’s misleading. Solely because we’re the ones here on the ground who are trying to pull this wagon. And you know me, I love nostalgia, but it’s got to be current, it’s got to be active. And right now, we need active.”

Rhodes cited rising WWE Superstars like Trick Williams as active ways WWE could grow. Helwani asked for the second “unfinished” story, but Rhodes played coy and said he couldn’t give everything away.
