Chris Jericho details original plans for banning his theme song in AEW.

In 2021, All Elite Wrestling fans did something incredible when they sang “Judas” acapella as Jericho walked to the ring. For those unaware, this was when MJF had banned the use of Y2J’s theme song in storyline.

Speaking to GamesHub in a recent interview, Chris Jericho explained it was a great moment tied to his storyline with the current AEW World Champion, where multiple stipulations were introduced, including banning his popular theme. The angle, which he noted lasted exactly 366 days, was built around testing what would happen if the song was forbidden and how the crowd would react.

“It was a great moment. We were doing the storyline with MJF, and he had all these stipulations — one of them was banning Judas from being played. The idea came up — I think it was collaborative, the whole storyline lasted exactly 366 days, a year and a day — that we should ban the song and see what the crowd does.”

He recalled that several ideas were discussed in production meetings on how to handle it. One producer suggested displaying the lyrics on screen with a bouncing ball, while another proposed placing lyric sheets under the seats. However, after speaking with Tony Khan, the approach was kept more organic. Khan compared it to a concert experience, saying fans either know the words or they don’t, and forcing it would take away from the moment.

“There were a lot of theories in the production meeting about how to make it work. One producer was adamant we needed to put the lyrics on the screen with a bouncing ball. Someone else wanted to put lyrics under the chairs. Everyone had ideas. But Tony Khan and I talked about it, and he said, ‘When you go to a concert, people know the words or they don’t.’ That’s the organic nature of it. If you force it, it’s not going to be as cool.”

Chris Jericho agreed with that direction, adding that if it failed, it would still enhance the heel storyline, but if it worked, it could become something special. The first few seconds were slightly awkward, but by the third line, the crowd had fully locked in. Some fans even pulled up the lyrics on their phones, which he felt was fine.

The former Demo God described it as one of the coolest and most underrated moments he has been part of, saying he can’t recall another instance where something like that happened in the same way. In his view, it was a rare moment where Fozzy and professional wrestling came together perfectly.

“But that was one of the coolest moments I’ve ever been part of, and I think it’s actually a fairly underrated moment in AEW history and in wrestling history. That’s the only time I can ever remember that happening that way. It was the one time where Fozzy and wrestling collided perfectly.”
