Joey Janela Got Death Threats Over Sabu Match
Joey Janela opens up about the vitriol he faced over Sabu match.
Joey Janela squared off against the former ECW World Heavyweight Champion in what turned out to be Sabu’s final match at the GCW-promoted Spring Break event earlier this year. The pro wrestling icon passed away three weeks later.
In a follow-up interview, Janela said the real-life Terrance Michael took kratom to ensure his participation in the No Rope Barbed Wire match at the April 18 event. Janela also mentioned that, during the match, Sabu was knocked “out cold” after an Air Sabu attempt.
The interview put Janela and Game Changer Wrestling in hot water, as fans began pointing fingers at the use of kratom as a trigger for Sabu’s sudden death. Joey clarified his comments in a lengthy social media post.
Joey Janela on facing death threats after the Sabu match
In a new interview with The Stunner’s Rob Pasbani, Janela revealed he came under fire after the Sabu match, with social media users resorting to death threats and abusive messages directed at him.
“Everyone dogpiled me,” Janela said. “They said I killed Sabu, that I was a murderer. People were messaging me on anonymous accounts saying, ‘Don’t come to GCW in Dallas because I’m going to have a gun and I’m going to avenge Sabu’s death. I’m going to kill you.’
“Like, it got rough, dude. It was a rough, rough circumstance, but Sabu’s family and (Rob) Van Dam were nothing but kind to me. They know I didn’t mean anything. They knew that we sent out Sabu on the best note possible.
“Sabu loved it. He wanted to wrestle again after that. He wanted to do an explosion match with me this year. But that wasn’t gonna happen, you know.”
