Kota Ibushi Becomes NJPW’s First Ever World Heavyweight Champion

At NJPW’s 49th Anniversary event, Kota Ibushi defeated El Desperado in the final title defense for the IWGP Heavyweight and Intercontinental Championships. The two belts have now been unified, declaring Ibushi as the first-ever IWGP World Heavyweight Champion.

A new era has now begun in NJPW, as the lineages of the IWGP Heavyweight and Intercontinental Championships started in 1987 and 2011, respectively. Antonio Inoki was the first ever IWGP Heavyweight Champion, while current WWE Superstar MVP was the very IWGP Intercontinental Champion.
